Captains down Cats 4-2
SHREVEPORT- Christopher Garcia was 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Captains doubled up the Cats 4-2 on Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field.
With the win, the Captains have taken two of the first three games in the series from the first-half division champion Cats.
Shreveport-Bossier broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Three of the first four batters in the fourth reached on walks before Kevin Griffin drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice. The next batter, Joe Urtuzuastegui looped a single to center, scoring Andres Rodriguez for a 2-0 Captains lead.
The Captains would add two more runs in the fifth inning as Jose Salazar led off the inning with a single and Jonathan Reynoso reached on an infield hit. The next batter, Dwayne White hit a bouncer to Cats' shortstop Cameron Blair who threw to second for a force out, but the ball was dropped by second baseman Isa Garcia and all runners were safe.
The next hitter, Garcia singled to center followed by a Rodriguez sacrifice fly for a 4-0 Shreveport-Bossier lead.
The Cats brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning, but could not score. They got on the scoreboard in the eighth on a John Allen RBI single scoring Brian Fryer to narrow the lead to 4-1. In the top of the ninth, Kelley Gulledge led off with a double to right and came around to score on a double by Garcia to bring the Cats to within two. Closer Justin Dowdy then retired the final three batters in a row to end the game and pick up his fourth save of the season.
Jimmy Heard, a Shreveport-native making his second professional start, allowed no runs on three hits through six innings to earn his second consecutive victory.
Matt Gibbs (0-1) had his longest outing in a Cats' uniform, going seven innings and permitting three earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two but walked five as he suffered his first loss of the season.
Pat O'Sullivan collected a single in the eighth inning on Wednesday to extend his hitting streak to 27 games. Brian Fryer was 2-for-4 as he hit safely for the 22 straight contest.
The series finale is on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. in Shreveport. Ryan Riddle (4-3) starts for the Cats and will be opposed by Shreveport-Bossier left-hander Aaron Cunningham.

 In Memoriam: Sebert Pate
Sebert Pate, former Chairman of Texas Refinery Corp. and caretaker of the LaGrave Field site from 1964-2002, died on Friday. Pate was an avid supporter of the Cats, had season tickets on the third base side and attended many Cats games until his health no longer permitted him to do so. It was Pate who sold the LaGrave Field land to Cats’ owner Carl Bell so that LaGrave Field could be rebuilt.
“On behalf of the Fort Worth Cats, I want to express my personal and our collective sorrow in the passing of our good friend Sebert Pate,” said Cats’ owner Carl Bell. “It was largely through his efforts and encouragement that we were able to acquire back in 2001 the grounds of the old LaGrave Field.”
A generous donor, Pate was a benefactor of the Amon Carter, Modern and Kimbell Art museums and the Jewel Charity Ball. He made annual gifts to the Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences, which provided funding for a scholarship in nursing specifically for minority students at TCU.
“Among his many civic works, Sebert served for many years on the Texas Wesleyan University Board of Trustees, said Bell. “It is an interesting part of the deal we made with him and others with Texas Refinery Co., which had bought the old LaGrave Field back in the 60’s, that he and I, in talking about bringing back the Cats and about his love for the TWU Rams baseball program, that I offered to him and TWU that if we could make a deal on the land so we could rebuild LaGrave Field, that the Rams could play for free for at least 15 years at the ballpark we built.” Read More
