Cats ink catcher, outfielder
The Cats have signed catcher Adam Miller and outfielder Brad Sullivan to contracts for the 2009 season, it was announced today.
Miller, 26, split the 2008 season between Shreveport in the American Association and San Angelo in the United League. With Shreveport in 43 games, Miller had 14 runs batted in and split time between first base and behind the plate. He was a member of both the 2006 and 2007 Cats’ championship teams, playing in 39 games with the Cats in 2006 and 46 games in 2007.
He played high school baseball in Waxahachie and college ball at Northeastern (Okla.) State.
Sullivan was a first round draft pick of the Oakland A’s in 2003 as a pitcher, but will play primarily in the outfield for the Cats. After being drafted out of the University of Houston, Sullivan spent five seasons in the Oakland system.
In his first full season in the minors in 2004, he posted an 8-11 record and a 4.65 ERA in 27 games at Modesto in the California League. Injuries limited his time on the mound in 2005. He made 21 relief appearances for Stockton in the California League in 2006.
With the University of Houston, he notched a 13-1 record with a 1.83 ERA in 18 starts in 2003. He had a 2.91 ERA in 2003 before being drafted. He was a part of Team USA in the summer of the 2002 at the World University Championships and had a 7-0 record with an 0.72 ERA.
Cats re-sign Gwaltney
The Cats have agreed on a contract with right-handed pitcher Lee Gwaltney for the 2009 season, the club announced today.
Gwaltney was 9-2 with a 2.57 ERA in 2008 for Fort Worth. His ERA ranked fourth in the American Association. He began the season at Double-A San Antonio in the Padres’ system, before re-joining the Cats on May 28 and winning his first seven decisions in a Fort Worth uniform.
He posted a 6-2 record with a 3.16 ERA during his 2007 campaign with the league-champion Cats. His 3.16 ERA ranked 3rd among American Association pitchers. He worked 105 1/3 innings in 23 games, struck out 59 and walked 30. He led the team in complete games with four.
After being drafted in the sixth round by Philadelphia in 2002, he spent 2002 with Batavia in the NY-Penn League and split 2003 with Lakewood and the Phillies’ Gulf Coast League team.
In his minor league career, Gwaltney is 34-23 with a 3.30 ERA in 130 games.
Gwaltney, 28, was 3-12 with a 4.05 ERA for Louisiana Tech in 2002. He currently resides in Willow Park, Texas.
Cats re-sign Crow
Feb. 9 - The Cats have re-signed 2008 first-round draft pick Aaron Crow, it was announced today. The right-handed pitcher appeared in one regular season game last season, working a scoreless inning in El Paso in his professional debut. He then made two relief appearances in the post season, allowing no runs and no hits in two innings of work. Crow, out of the University of Missouri, was the ninth overall pick in the 2008 Major League Draft by the Washington Nationals, but was unable to reach an agreement with the Nationals before the Aug. 15 deadline, leading to his signing with the Cats. He is expected to re-enter the draft in June.

Gulledge rejoins Cats
Feb. 5 - A key member of the Cats' 2007 championship team has returned. The Cats have signed catcher Kelley Gulledge to a contract for the 2009 season, the team announced today. Gulledge rejoins Fort Worth after spending 2008 in the Dodgers’ organization.
Gulledge, 30, split last season between Double-A Jacksonville and Triple-A Las Vegas. He started and ended the season in Jacksonville, batting .286 with four homers and 15 RBIs in 27 games for the Suns. He also appeared in one game on the mound, working a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in late August. It was his first professional pitching appearance. With Las Vegas, Gulledge played in only seven games between May-July.
In his first stint with the Cats, Gulledge batted .302 with 51 runs batted in and a team-leading 12 home runs in 2007. He played in 76 games after missing the first three weeks of the season because of injury. He was a reserve catcher for the American Association South All-Star squad in July and earned All-Independent Second Team honors from Baseball America following the season.
Gulledge had three home runs and seven RBIs in the Cats’ 10-game playoff run that culminated in the 2007 American Association Championship. He was signed by the Dodgers after the season.
Cats get reliever from Sioux Falls
Feb. 2 - The Cats on Tuesday acquired right-handed reliever Kelly Casares from Sioux Falls in exchange for right-hander Matt Reilly.
Casares, 25, spent the last two seasons with the Canaries. In 2008, he was 3-1 with a 5.53 ERA in 30 relief outings for the league champions. The previous season, he posted a 3-3 record with a 2.23 ERA in 30 appearances.
His professional career began in 2006 with the Edinburg Coyotes in the United League, where he had no record with an 0.68 ERA in 22 games. Casares, originally from Missouri City, Texas, played college baseball at UT-Pan American.
Reilly in his only season with Fort Worth was 2-3 with a 2.94 ERA in 34 games with the Cats. He appeared in 33 games out of the bullpen and made one start.
Gautreau sold to Rays
Jan. 30 - The Tampa Bay Rays have purchased the contract of Cats’ infielder Jake Gautreau, the team announced today. He becomes the second player from the Cats’ 2008 squad sold to a major league organization. Closer Jon Hunton’s contract was purchased by the Oakland Athletics in November.
In his first year with the Cats in 2008, Gautreau batted .282 with 12 home runs and 70 RBIs in 90 games with Fort Worth. He also had five hits in 15 at bats in the Cats’ four playoff games. During the year, Gautreau started 42 games at first base and also started double-digit games at second, third and as the designated hitter.
Gautreau, 29, was a first-round draft pick by the San Diego Padres in 2001 (14th overall) after starring at Tulane University.
In 2007, he played in 62 games for Triple-A New Orleans where he batted .226 with six homers and 30 runs batted in. He played in 2005 and 2006 for Buffalo in the International League, Cleveland’s top farm club. In 2005, he had 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 113 games.
He is the 18th member of the Cats’ organization to be sold to a big league organization since the team returned to Fort Worth in 2001.
